"If only a quarter of the world's loss of output during the recession were to prove permanent, the present value of these losses could be as much as 90 cent of annual world product. How did this happen? Quite simply, the financial sector has become bigger and riskier. The UK case is dramatic, with banking assets jumping from 50 per cent of GDP to more than 550 per cent over the past four decades."
"Does today's engorged financial system produce gains that justify these costs? In a recent speech, Adair Turner, chairman of the UK's Financial Services Authority, argues it does not. Financial systems are important servants of the economy, but poor masters. A large part of the activity of the financial sector seems to be a machine to transfer income and wealth from outsiders to insiders, while increasing the fragility of the economy as a whole. Given the extent of the government-induced distortions in the system, even the fiercest free marketeer should accept this. It is hard to see any substantial benefit from the massive leveraging up of the economy and, above all, the real estate sector, that we saw recently. This just created illusory gains on the way up and real pain on the way down." Martin Wolf, FT April 21st, 2010

Passion for Future, Harnessing Failure and Change
Let us apply Confucius' original action-learning principle stated 2500 years ago:
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand"
The current fundamental economic crisis gives us a chance for a high level dialogue between the business community, policy-makers, artists and academics. We are organizing this workshop to encourage people for responsible leadership and sustainability. In that capacity, the ONWARD conference provides a unique platform for leading experts to foster CHANGE by exchange.
Admitting failures –and to deal with it- is a key cultural element which we have to implement in business, society and politics. Artists are used to do that – and we want to learn from them, how to get a better understanding of values, which really matter and we can identify with.
The software industry has shown in their short lifetime already several paradigm changes and how to combine engineering and creative design. To advance the discussion of the analyses, the lessons learned, as well as to point out potential solutions to the current crises we planned this workshop.
Join artists, corporate, academic and policy leaders in an in-depth discussion event on how to move forward and help to change mindsets in a challenging economic environment!
We would be delighted to welcome you to Munich and Nice in 2010 for this event.
Sincerely,
Stefan Doeblin
